The iconic “Panama Hat” was originally made in Ecuador, handwoven from toquilla straw by skilled artisans. So how did it end up with the wrong name?
Back in the early 1900s, thousands of these hats were shipped through Panama during the construction of the canal. Travelers, businessmen, and even President Theodore Roosevelt were photographed wearing them here, and eventually the world simply started calling them “Panama Hats.”
Today, you’ll still find beautiful versions sold throughout Casco Viejo, especially in small boutiques and artisan shops.
And honestly, wearing one while riding through the city in our vintage open-air safari cars just feels appropriate
