THE STORY BEHIND THE PANAMA CANAL

But the world didn’t stay the same… and neither did ships.

By the early 2000s, cargo vessels were getting bigger much bigger. So big, in fact, that many of them could no longer pass through the original canal. Global trade was evolving, and Panama had a choice: adapt or fall behind.

In 2016, the canal stepped into a new era.

The expansion introduced a brand-new set of locks, built to accommodate what are now known as “Neo-Panamax” ships massive vessels that can carry nearly three times more cargo than the original ones.

And watching one of these giants move through the locks today? It’s something else entirely.

But this wasn’t just about size or capacity.

It was about staying relevant in a fast-changing world.

The expansion sent a clear message: Panama isn’t just part of global trade it’s still right at the center of it.

And when you stand there, watching these enormous ships glide through with precision, it’s hard not to feel like you’re witnessing history… happening in real time.

You can leave the experience in one of our VW open top Kombi.
