We asked ourselves a simple question:
What if the journey itself became just as memorable as the destinations?
That question became the foundation upon which Tomi Tours was built.
Many city tours focus primarily on the places being visited. Guests are transported from one landmark to another, often following a rigid schedule and a standardized script. While these tours can be informative, they sometimes miss something important: the emotional connection between the traveler and the city.
We wanted to design something different.
Instead of creating a tour that simply showed guests Panama City, we wanted to create an experience that allowed them to truly feel it.
The first piece of the puzzle was choosing the right vehicles.
The decision to build the experience around classic Volkswagen vehicles completely transformed the concept. The colorful VW Safari cars, the iconic 1974 VW Kombi, and the classic VW Dune Buggy are not simply methods of transportation they are part of the attraction itself.
The moment guests see the vehicles, something changes.
People smile. Cameras come out. Excitement immediately builds.
And once the journey begins, the vehicles create a completely different relationship between guests and the city.
Unlike traditional buses or enclosed vehicles, the open-air design removes barriers. Guests can feel the tropical breeze, hear the sounds of the city, smell the ocean along the Causeway, and enjoy unobstructed panoramic views in every direction. Instead of observing Panama through a window, they become part of it.
This connection was one of the most important design principles behind the Tomi Tours experience.
The city should feel alive.
The next step was designing the routes.
Panama City is a fascinating destination because it contains multiple worlds within a relatively small area. Modern skyscrapers rise above one of the oldest colonial districts in the Americas. Busy financial districts sit only minutes away from quiet coastal roads. Historic landmarks coexist alongside cutting-edge architecture.
Rather than focusing on a single aspect of the city, we wanted guests to experience these contrasts firsthand.
This is why our routes are carefully designed to create a sense of progression and discovery. Throughout a single tour, guests travel through dramatically different environments. They may begin among the modern towers of Panama City’s skyline, continue through the historic streets of Casco Viejo, drive along the waterfront of the Amador Causeway, and discover hidden local areas that many visitors never see.
Each section of the route tells a different chapter of Panama’s story.
Together, those chapters create a deeper understanding of the city as a whole.
But creating a memorable experience requires more than beautiful vehicles and great routes.
The details matter.
In fact, some of the smallest details often have the biggest impact.
The pace of the tour was intentionally designed to feel relaxed rather than rushed. We wanted guests to have time to absorb their surroundings, ask questions, take photographs, and enjoy spontaneous moments along the way.
Photo opportunities were also built into the experience from the beginning.
Many travelers want more than memories they want meaningful photographs that help tell the story of their journey. Our guides know the best viewpoints, hidden corners, and scenic locations throughout the city, helping guests capture images that often become some of their favorite travel memories.
Music is another subtle but important element.
The right soundtrack can completely change the atmosphere inside a vehicle. Combined with the open-air environment, beautiful scenery, and the excitement of exploring a new destination, it helps create an experience that feels cinematic and emotionally engaging.
Flexibility was equally important in our design process.
One of the reasons we chose to focus on private experiences is because no two travelers are exactly alike.
Some guests are passionate about history and want to learn every detail about the Panama Canal, Casco Viejo, and Panama’s transformation over the centuries.
Others are more interested in photography, architecture, food, culture, or simply enjoying a relaxing drive through the city.
Private tours allow us to adapt naturally to those interests. Rather than forcing every guest into the same experience, we can personalize the journey to match their preferences and energy.
This flexibility often leads to the most memorable moments.
A spontaneous stop for photos.
An unexpected recommendation.
A hidden viewpoint.
A local story that sparks curiosity.
These are often the moments guests remember most.
Of course, none of this would be possible without our guides.
When designing Tomi Tours, we understood that guides would play a crucial role in shaping the experience. We never wanted guides to feel like scripted narrators delivering memorized information. Instead, we wanted them to become storytellers, ambassadors, and companions throughout the journey.
The best tours feel like exploring a city with a knowledgeable local friend.
That philosophy continues to shape every experience we offer.
Over the years, Tomi Tours has evolved. New vehicles have joined the fleet, routes have been refined, and new ideas continue to emerge. Yet the core vision remains unchanged.
Our goal has never been to move people from one attraction to another.
Our goal is to create moments.
Moments of discovery.
Moments of connection.
Moments of laughter, surprise, and wonder.
When guests tell us that their Tomi Tours experience was the highlight of their trip to Panama, we know we have accomplished what we originally set out to do.
Because at its heart, the Tomi Tours experience was designed to be much more than a tour.
It was designed to become a memory.
